About Our Founder
Joe began his surveying career in 1951 with the California State Division of Highways (CALTRANS). He left CALTRANS as the Transportation Surveyor Party Chief in the early 70’s to accept the role as Party Chief on the very first subdivision survey in Castle Rock, CO. In 1974 Joe went on to work for Powers Elevation Company as Party Chief for crews surveying elevations for new and existing oil and gas wells. In the mid-80’s, Joe made the decision to form his own company, Joe Kehl & Associates, Inc. Providing surveying services to Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota and Colorado. Joe’s survey experience combined the days of chains and transit as a way to identify distance and direction, to the latest advancements of technology, satellites and equipment in the 21stcentury.
Joe’s son Randy joined him in the field every summer as a young boy, up and until he graduated high school. While helping his dad with tasks, Joe taught Randy the importance behind every step necessary to complete an accurate survey. Randy went on to study at Montana State, getting his degree in Geology. A passion he developed from the time spent out in the field with his dad. Randy worked for a number of companies including US Silica as the Corporate Geologist overseeing all mines.
Randy joined Joe Kehl & Associates when his Joe fell ill with cancer. He continued to work with father up and until Joe was no longer able to work. Randy continued Joe’s legacy by taking over Joe Kehl & Associates after his father passed in 2005.
Joe was widely known as a strong and quiet man. Who believed that a person’s actions were far more important than words. He took great pride in his profession, working hard for every client to their complete their job correctly. His hard-work ethics came from early life experiences. Overcoming a severe speech disorder, often traveling across country by train alone as a small boy in order to work with specialists. A man of absolute patience and compassion, Joe’s traits carried over as a husband, father and often a mentor to younger apprentices hoping to learn the profession.
Joe is greatly missed by his family and loved ones, and by those that worked with him over the years. To this day, Randy still receives calls from clients that previously worked with Joe. Who return to Kehl Survey Solutions when needs arise, as they know they will receive thorough and reliable support. Even on the most difficult types of projects.
